Microsoft labels Copilot experiences as Basic or Premium

Microsoft’s Copilot overview, updated on 27 August 2026, says Microsoft 365 apps and the Microsoft Copilot app now display labels for Copilot Chat (Basic), M365 Copilot (Basic) and M365 Copilot (Premium). Basic experiences mainly use public web data and content the user explicitly provides or has open, while Premium can automatically ground answers in permitted emails, files, meetings and other work data through Microsoft Graph and Work IQ.
Before these labels, seeing Copilot inside Word, Teams or a browser did not reliably tell a user what data it could reach. That ambiguity made a weak answer look like a prompting problem when the account might lack automatic work-data grounding. The label is now a useful first check, not a full permission or policy verdict. Adoption leads can pair it with one non-sensitive retrieval test and document what each group can use before training people on workflows that their licence or tenant cannot support.
Analysis
Ask one pilot user from each licensing group to open the Microsoft Copilot app and record the label shown. Test a harmless file or email they can already access; if the result conflicts with the label, ask an administrator to confirm the licence and tenant settings before using sensitive company data.
