IBM stops Project Online backups the day after Microsoft shuts the service

IBM told Storage Protect for Cloud customers on 21 September 2026 that Microsoft is retiring Project Online, also called Project Web App, on 30 September 2026. IBM’s product depends on Microsoft’s Project Online APIs, so it will stop new backup jobs and turn off restoration of Project Online data from 1 October 2026. Copies already stored stay available under each customer’s current subscription, storage, and retention settings. IBM advised finishing any needed exports before 1 October 2026. The notice applies to IBM’s Microsoft 365 backup customers, not every Microsoft tenant.
Until now, Project Online could still look “alive” in Microsoft 365 even as Microsoft wound it down, and third-party backup could still pull and restore project data through Microsoft’s APIs. Flows, lists, and handoffs that pointed at Project Web App could keep running while someone assumed a backup vendor would catch mistakes. After 30 September, those APIs are gone. IBM will not take new backups or restore Project Online data from 1 October, even if older copies remain on disk. Anything still triggered from Project Online, including a Power Automate connection that only works because PWA is there, will not get a last-minute restore path from this vendor.
Analysis
Treat this as a cutoff to act on, not a trend to watch. Search your flows, connections, and SharePoint lists for Project Online or Project Web App, then export or move any process that still depends on it before 1 October so you are not relying on a restore that IBM has already said it will disable.
