UK staff spend nearly a billion pounds of their own money on work AI

Deloitte UK estimates employees spend £958 million a year of their own money on generative AI tools used for work. The figure comes from a survey of 25,000 workers run from 7 May to 10 June 2026 and published on 16 September. Two thirds of British workers have used generative AI at work. Of those users, 31 percent said they do so without their employer’s knowledge. A quarter of UK workers use the tools every day. Users claimed they save about 70 minutes a week, mostly put back into more work for the same employer. Sixty five percent of generative AI users said they still lack convincing leadership on how the tools should be used.
Until now, many firms treated AI as a licensed product and a short list of approved apps. Unofficial chats were easy to ignore because they looked like private experiments, not a second operating system running on personal cards. The survey shows that system is already live. People are paying for tools, hiding the use, and still getting only a modest weekly saving, while most users say nobody has set a credible way of working. The gap is not access to a chatbot. It is the absence of shared context, quality checks, and rules that make an output safe to reuse.

Treat this as a change to act on, not a reason to buy another personal subscription. List every work AI tool your team already pays for or uses off the books, then write one short operating rule covering what context can be pasted, what a finished output must include, and who reviews it before it leaves the chat.
