Teams removes Copilot from the chat list in October

Microsoft will remove the Copilot shortcut from the Teams chat list on desktop and web, starting mid-October 2026 and finishing by late October worldwide and in GCC. Users will open Copilot from the Copilot app on the Teams app bar instead. A coachmark will appear before the old entry disappears. Mobile is unchanged. Existing Copilot conversations, notifications, supported deep links, and session continuity continue. If Copilot is unpinned, Teams sends people to the app overflow menu. Microsoft says no data is lost and no admin action is required.
Until now, Teams offered two Copilot doors that looked like two products: one sitting in the chat list next to people and channels, and one sitting as an app on the left. Many people only ever used the chat-list item, so they treated Copilot as a chat, not as a separate app. That split already mixed up Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Chat, and meeting recaps. After the change, there is one Teams door on desktop and web. The work Copilot can do does not change, but muscle memory does. If Copilot is unpinned, the remaining door is hidden in overflow, which will read as Copilot disappearing rather than as a simpler layout.
Analysis
Treat this as a wayfinding change, not a feature upgrade. Pin the Copilot app in the Teams app bar this week, then send one short note that the chat-list shortcut goes away in October and that the remaining button is the same Copilot, not a new tool.
