Teams puts all channel alerts in one settings list this October

Microsoft Teams will add a single place to manage channel alerts at Settings, Notifications and activity, then Manage channel notifications. The change is on by default, keeps your current channel choices, and needs no admin policy. It is due in Targeted Release in early October 2026, then worldwide through the rest of that month, on desktop and web. A related update, delayed from late August and September, adds three named presets: All new messages, Mentions and replies, and Mute, with extra control over mentions and threads. That preset work is also due in early October 2026, with worldwide rollout into mid-October, and GCC later in the month. Presets cover desktop, web, and mobile.
Until now, quieting a noisy channel meant opening that channel, finding its bell, and repeating the job for every team you sit in. Most people never finished that tour, so unread badges kept treating a busy general channel the same as a mention that actually needs a reply. The new list does not invent a smarter inbox. It just makes the existing mute and mention choices visible in one pass, so you can finally see which channels still shout. If you wait until after October and keep the defaults, the noise will look the same as today.
Analysis
Treat this as a one-time cleanup, not a new habit to maintain. When Manage channel notifications appears, walk the list once and set noisy catch-all channels to Mute or Mentions and replies, then stop.
