Teams moves pinned files and messages under chat headers and drops the old side panes

Microsoft Teams is adding a centralized place to manage important resources in chats and channels. Users can pin frequently used files, links, and messages directly below the header, pin more than one message alongside other items, and group them into folders. The same pins work on mobile. The older In this chat and In this channel panes are being removed. Existing resources are meant to move into the new layout. Rollout begins in Targeted Release in late September 2026, with general availability expected in early to mid-October 2026. Microsoft says admins do not need to take action.
Until now, the reliable path to a key file or decision in a busy chat or channel was often scroll, search, or that side pane people half-remembered. Important work lived in the stream, so catch-up meant hunting through noise rather than opening a short list of what the space actually depends on. The change puts those anchors in one consistent spot under the header and kills the old panes. That can cut daily friction in long-running teams, but it also means muscle memory breaks overnight. Pins become more visible and more shared, so a cluttered pin list will feel like another mini-inbox unless someone is deliberate about what stays pinned.
Analysis
Treat this as a light prep item, not a new productivity project. Before general availability, pick one noisy channel and one busy group chat you live in, list the three to five files, links, or messages people reopen weekly, and plan those as the only pins so the migrated list does not become visual clutter.
