Teams Facilitator can now search the web and post answers mid-meeting

Microsoft has started rolling out a September 2026 update to Teams Facilitator, the meeting agent that needs Microsoft 365 Copilot Premium. When a licensed user turns it on for a meeting, it can spot an unanswered factual question, run a Copilot web search, and post the answer straight into the meeting chat. Microsoft says it is meant to fire less than once per meeting so it does not dominate the conversation. Answers land in chat for everyone in the call, including people without Copilot and external guests. Admins can switch the behaviour off for the whole organisation, and it only works if Copilot web search is allowed. The same period also expands Facilitator into channel meetings. Enablement stays manual per meeting rather than always on.
Until now, Copilot in Teams mostly waited for someone to open a panel and ask. Meeting facts that nobody knew still meant a private browser tab, a whispered aside, or a vague “I’ll check later,” while notes and actions stayed split across chat, flags, and personal lists. The change is that a licensed host can let an agent interrupt that gap in public. Useful when a date, definition, or public figure needs a quick check. Risky when the chat becomes a second source of truth nobody owns, especially with customers or partners on the line. Your follow-up routine still matters more than the auto-post.
Analysis
Treat this as a controlled experiment, not a default. If you have Copilot Premium, enable Facilitator on one internal meeting this week, watch what it posts in chat, and write a one-line team rule: who turns it on, who verifies the answer, and keep it off for external calls until that habit sticks.
