Teams admin centre gets separate controls for built-in and third-party AI agents

Microsoft is putting AI agents under clearer Teams admin centre management. Admins can discover and turn on third-party Teams agents from the admin centre, with more configuration visibility, ahead of general availability planned for October 2026. Built-in agents such as Channel Agent, Facilitator, and Copilot Agent now sit under Teams apps > Built-in Teams agents, separate from org-wide Microsoft apps settings. That split is tied to roadmap item 564766, with a general availability window called out from July 2026. Among the September meeting updates, Facilitator can run mid-meeting web search without waiting for a prompt. Existing agent-level settings are not rewritten by the new policies, and availability still depends on cloud and licence.
Until now, agent behaviour was easy to treat like another app toggle buried in broad Microsoft apps policy. Meeting and channel AI could expand while ownership, external behaviour, and who could turn things on stayed fuzzy for small admin teams already juggling Teams sprawl and permission reviews. The change is that built-in and third-party agents get distinct admin paths, so policy boundaries can match how the tools actually show up at work. Facilitator acting without a prompt raises the stakes: web search mid-meeting is no longer only a user-initiated Copilot habit, which means defaults and pilot scope matter before agents become another unmanaged surface next to abandoned Teams and overshared sites.

Treat this as a defaults-and-boundary decision, not a catalogue shopping trip. Open Teams apps > Built-in Teams agents this week, set Facilitator (including unsolicited web search) to a tight pilot group only, and list any third-party agents already in use so October’s admin catalogue does not become uncontrolled enablement on top of existing sprawl.
