Teams admin center lets you copy alert rules and watch up to 500 users live

Microsoft is updating Real-Time Alerting in the Teams admin center so admins can duplicate existing rules, upload users in bulk when creating or editing supported rules, and delete rules directly. Organizations can monitor up to 500 users across rules that cover in-progress meetings and calls. The change applies worldwide from late September 2026 and is turned on by default. No admin action is required to receive the features. Bulk upload format details beyond the 500-user monitoring limit are not spelled out in the Message Center note.
Before this, scaling live meeting and call alerts meant rebuilding similar rules by hand and keeping monitored user lists small enough to manage without bulk tools. That kept real-time oversight practical only for a short list of people, not a broader set of owners, executives, or high-traffic accounts. After rollout, the same rule pattern can be copied and filled faster, and the 500-user ceiling makes mid-size monitoring less of a spreadsheet chore. It does not fix Teams sprawl, stale sites, or permission debt. It only lowers the cost of watching live sessions for people you already care about.
Analysis
Treat this as a narrow ops upgrade, not a governance programme. Before late September, open Real-Time Alerting, list the rules you already run, and decide whether a single duplicated rule plus a bulk list of up to a few hundred priority users is worth maintaining. If you do not use these alerts today, leave them alone rather than inventing a new watchlist you cannot staff.
