Tableau explores first while Power BI models first

A 23 September practitioner comparison argues that Tableau starts with visual exploration, while complex Power BI work quickly shifts to semantic modelling, DAX and filter context. It also warns that weak SQL, joins and business logic produce wrong decisions no matter how polished the dashboard looks.
Tool comparisons often become feature checklists, but report builders usually face a more basic choice: are they exploring an unfamiliar dataset or publishing governed measures that must stay consistent across reports? Those jobs reward different development habits. For Microsoft 365 reporting teams, Power BI’s wider ecosystem fit is useful only when the model and KPI definitions are sound. Choosing the tool before naming the reporting job can lock exploratory work into an overbuilt model or turn important measures into one-off visual calculations.
Analysis
For the next reporting request, write one sentence that labels the job as exploration or governed repeatable reporting. If it is the second, define the grain, relationships and KPI calculation before choosing the visuals.
