Standalone Whiteboard apps lose support on 16 October

Microsoft is retiring the standalone Whiteboard apps for Windows, iPhone, and Android. From 16 October 2026 they will no longer be supported for work, school, or personal Microsoft accounts. Whiteboard itself is not going away. Microsoft says people should open boards in Microsoft Teams or in a supported web browser instead. The September 2026 roundup does not give a date when existing boards would be deleted. The change is about the dedicated apps, not the boards stored in the service.
Until now, a lot of hybrid meeting work lived in a separate Whiteboard app on a laptop or phone. That made it easy to treat the board as a private sketch pad, then forget it was never attached to the Teams meeting, the recap, or the follow-up list. After 16 October, that extra app path closes. If a board only lived in the standalone app on your device, the next time you need it you will have to find it in Teams or the browser. That is a small shift, but it is the same kind of break that already happens when meeting notes sit in chat, a private note, and a Planner board at once.
Analysis
This is a change to act on before the cutoff, not a new tool to learn. This week, open each board you still use from the Windows or phone app once inside Teams or the web, then pin or favourite that location so you are not hunting for it on 16 October.
