SharePoint pages get a switch to reduce permalink noise

Microsoft says SharePoint Online is adding a “Use permalinks” setting for page headings. When the setting is turned off, heading permalink controls no longer appear at each heading level. Microsoft published the Insider update on July 14, 2026 and says the feature is rolling out to enterprise tenant accounts.
Before this change, heading links were useful for sending someone straight to the right section of a long page, but they also added extra keyboard stops on every heading. On busy onboarding pages, project hubs, and internal guidance pages, that could make navigation feel more cluttered for keyboard and screen reader users. Now page owners have a clearer choice. Keep permalinks where deep links help people find a section quickly, or turn them off where the page is mainly meant to be read from top to bottom without extra controls getting in the way.
Analysis
Pick one long SharePoint page your team actually uses and test it with keyboard navigation. If the heading links add noise rather than help, turn off “Use permalinks” and keep the page simpler.
