Business owners share SharePoint accountability with IT guardrails

SharePoint consultant Gregory Zelfond argues that business teams should own their content, permissions and quality, while IT provides the platform controls, security and governance. The article is a fresh, practical prompt to make the split explicit rather than leaving site owners waiting for every routine change.
For SharePoint and Teams admins, the recurring failure is not simply too many permission requests. It is an unclear operating model: business owners cannot act, while IT becomes responsible for content decisions it is not best placed to make. A RACI-style split gives admins a better boundary. Keep tenant settings, lifecycle, security, reporting and guardrails with IT; name business owners for content accuracy, access decisions and day-to-day stewardship. That makes self-service safer instead of treating it as an uncontrolled hand-off.
Analysis
Pick one active Team site this week and document who owns content quality, membership changes, external-sharing requests and retention. Put the admin-only controls beside it so neither side assumes the other will act.
