SharePoint now shows which content Microsoft Copilot cites

Microsoft’s updated Message Center notice says SharePoint AI citation analytics are rolling out from late August through the end of September. Eligible tenants with more than 50 Microsoft 365 Copilot seats will see citation measures for documents, pages and news posts in Site Usage and page or file analytics; the feature is on by default.
Site owners have generally measured content through views and viewers, while Copilot use could make a page influential without a direct visit. That left intranet teams guessing which material was actually helping people find an answer in chat. Citation analytics adds a useful signal, but it covers Microsoft 365 Copilot chat on desktop and web only in this release. It should inform content lifecycle decisions alongside accuracy, permissions and reader feedback—not become a league table for every Copilot or agent interaction.
Analysis
Choose one eligible site and agree how its content owner will review citations alongside views and support feedback. Use the first month to identify one frequently cited page that needs an accuracy or ownership check, rather than using the count as a publishing target.
