SharePoint lets people publish HTML pages from Site Pages

Microsoft Message Center item MC1479517 (Roadmap 569208) says SharePoint Online will let users create, upload, edit, and publish HTML pages. Public preview starts in early October 2026. Worldwide general availability begins in mid-November 2026 and is expected to finish by late December 2026. Pages live in the Site Pages library and use the same permissions as other pages. Authors can pick HTML page from + New, or create one with Copilot from the floating Copilot button if Copilot in SharePoint is licensed. Microsoft says no admin action is required before rollout. The notice is web-only.
Intranet publishing has been constrained to SharePoint pages, web parts, and whatever your authors could keep consistent. That limit was annoying, but it also kept random HTML dumps out of the same library that drives news, hubs, and the home site. After this lands, HTML sits next to those pages with no extra permission model. Copilot can generate a page, someone can upload markup from elsewhere, and it still inherits whatever Site Pages already allows. For a small admin team, that is a new way for the intranet to look unfinished, for search to mix page types, and for Copilot-created content to appear without a named owner.
Analysis
Treat this as a trend to watch, not a feature to celebrate. Before preview, list who has Edit on Site Pages for your home site and hub sites, and decide whether HTML page creation stays with a handful of publishers or gets left open to every Team owner who finds + New.
