SharePoint Framework update adds grouping to list commands

SharePoint Framework version 1.23 reached general availability on 28 May 2026. The release adds grouping support to list view command sets and ships a preview of the new SPFx command line interface. React 18 support remains in progress. The SPFx CLI itself is not expected to reach general availability until June. Microsoft positions the update as a stable base for building extensions across SharePoint, Teams, and Viva surfaces.
Before this release, most small admin teams already ran a handful of custom SPFx solutions that were written once and then left to age. Each new framework version introduced the same risk: something that worked yesterday could break after an update, and the original developer was often long gone. The addition of more command set capabilities does not reduce that burden. It increases the surface area that needs testing, documentation, and eventual replacement when the next Microsoft change lands.
Analysis
Run an inventory of every SPFx solution deployed in the tenant this week and mark which ones still have an owner who can update them. Anything without an owner gets scheduled for removal or replacement with out-of-the-box controls before the next update cycle creates new breakage.
