SharePoint Copilot starts rolling out worldwide on 30 September

Microsoft says Copilot in SharePoint, still in public preview, begins general availability on 30 September 2026. Everyday Copilot features from the preview stay included with a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence. Copilot in OneDrive is also set to become generally available on the same date. Advanced agent-style work and larger tasks will use Copilot Credits under usage-based billing, and users may be asked to confirm before credits are spent. Weekly preview usage limits go away at general availability, though daily service-protection limits can still apply. Preview PowerShell commands that let admins opt tenants and sites in or out are being retired. Existing preview settings are honoured only until 1 November 2026. Copilot Search is described as becoming the default search experience for Copilot-licensed users in SharePoint and OneDrive. Features appear as the rollout progresses, not necessarily on 30 September for every tenant.
Until now, SharePoint Copilot was an opt-in preview. Teams that wanted it turned it on. Teams that did not could keep it off with PowerShell. That made it easy to treat SharePoint as a quieter Copilot surface than Word, Outlook, or Teams. After 30 September it becomes licensed-default availability with a split bill: seat licence for everyday use, credits for heavier agent work. The 1 November cutoff is the real deadline. Preview opt-outs will not keep Copilot hidden once those settings expire, and Copilot Search may change what licensed people see first when they look for files.
Analysis
This is a change to act on only if your tenant used preview PowerShell to restrict SharePoint Copilot, or if people already build pages and reports from SharePoint libraries. Ask your admin whether post-GA availability controls are in place before 1 November, and tell colleagues that everyday SharePoint Copilot is in the licence while advanced runs may prompt for Copilot Credits.
