SharePoint Copilot preview shifts to opt-out in June
Microsoft Message Center item MC1311968 says Copilot in SharePoint will begin rolling out as an opt-out preview in mid-June 2026. Microsoft 365 Copilot licensed users will see a floating Copilot button across SharePoint pages, libraries, and lists unless the tenant or site is opted out.
SharePoint admins have been used to AI experiences arriving behind preview controls, pilots, and targeted groups. An opt-out preview changes the default posture: licensed users may see new creation and editing capabilities unless admins deliberately scope or block them. The risk is not that Copilot ignores permissions; the notice says it respects existing SharePoint access. The practical risk is readiness: site owners, custom layouts, high-traffic intranet pages, and sensitive libraries may all need a quick governance pass before the button appears.
Analysis
Review the tenant and site-level opt-out controls before mid-June. Prioritize executive sites, HR libraries, highly customized pages, and any site using Restricted Content Discovery.
