SharePoint Copilot goes live and old PowerShell opt-outs expire in November

Microsoft says Copilot in SharePoint leaves public preview as general availability starts rolling out on 30 September 2026. The feature lets people ask questions and generate pages, reports, and files from SharePoint content in natural language. The preview PowerShell controls that opted tenants and sites in or out are being retired. Those cmdlets are KnowledgeAgentScope, KnowledgeAgentSelectedSitesList, and KnowledgeAgentSelectedSitesListOperation. Existing PowerShell settings stay in force only until 1 November 2026. After that date, availability is managed with Site AI settings and Restricted Content Discovery. Restricted Content Discovery can hide content from specific sites, including recently used files, from organisation-wide search and Copilot answers.
During preview, a small admin team could keep Copilot off noisy or overshared sites with a PowerShell list. ExcludeSelectedSites, IncludeSelectedSites, and NoSites were a blunt but workable fence while permissions and stale libraries stayed messy. That fence is time-boxed. If those lists are not replaced with Site AI settings or Restricted Content Discovery by 1 November 2026, Copilot follows the general-availability model instead of your old opt-out. Sites you thought were quiet can start feeding answers without a new ticket landing in your queue.
Analysis
Treat this as a change to act on, not a feature to demo. Export current KnowledgeAgentScope and selected-site lists this week, then map every excluded site to Site AI settings or Restricted Content Discovery before 1 November so the preview fence does not vanish.
