SharePoint Brand Center will no longer force Public CDN on setup

Microsoft published roadmap item 571391 on 17 September 2026. It says Brand Center setup will let administrators turn the hub on without enabling Public CDN, a tenant-wide setting that today is switched on as part of that wizard. Public CDN will still be required later for features that depend on it, such as organisational fonts. General availability is listed as October 2026 for Worldwide tenants. The item is still marked In development, with no exact rollout date or guidance for existing Brand Center tenants.
Until now, Brand Center and Public CDN were sold as one click. If you only wanted a governed place for logos, colours, and brand assets, you still had to accept a tenant-wide content delivery network that many security and networking reviews treat as a separate risk. After this ships, branding governance can start without that consent. The interesting split is not fonts versus logos. It is who owns the CDN decision. Brand Center can sit with intranet owners. Public CDN can wait for a later, explicit yes from whoever actually needs hosted fonts.
Analysis
Treat this as a trap to avoid, not a reason to enable Public CDN early. Leave Brand Center off until the split setup appears, then turn it on for asset governance only and keep Public CDN disabled unless you have a real need for organisational fonts.
