SharePoint Alerts stop working in July 2026

SharePoint Alerts stop working in July 2026

Microsoft is retiring SharePoint Alerts. From July 2026, existing alerts stop working and can no longer be extended. Creation of new alerts was already turned off for tenants from January 2026. Microsoft is directing people to SharePoint Rules for simpler list and library notifications, or to Power Automate cloud flows for the classic alert patterns. It has published templates for common cases such as item created, item updated, changes by others, and file created. There is no automatic migration. Microsoft offers an assessment tool and a Power BI alerts report so admins can inventory alerts by site collection before they disappear.

For years, many teams treated SharePoint Alerts as the default change notice on lists and libraries. Anyone could click Alert me, get an email when something changed, and forget about ownership, run history, or what happened when mail delivery failed. That habit hid how fragile the notification layer really was. That free, personal alert path is now gone. Every notice you still need must be rebuilt as a Rule or a flow, with a clear owner, connection, and failure path. Flows also consume Power Platform request capacity and can spam people if triggers fire on every minor update. The deadline does not just move email from one feature to another. It forces a choice between simple Rules and maintainable flows before silent gaps appear in approvals, handoffs, and list-driven processes.

Analysis

This is a change to act on for any list or library where people still rely on classic alerts, not a reason to clone every old alert into a flow. Inventory the alerts on the SharePoint lists you actually use for work, drop the noisy ones, use Rules for simple same-list notices, and rebuild only the critical paths in Power Automate with a standard SharePoint trigger, a clear recipient pattern, and an alert to you on failed runs.
