Purview brings data protection rules to external services

Purview brings data protection rules to external services

Microsoft says its Purview preview begins in mid-August 2026 and lets admins create Data Loss Prevention (DLP) and automatic sensitivity-labeling policies for connected non-Microsoft services. DLP locations include Google Workspace, Box, Dropbox, Salesforce, ServiceNow, AWS and Cisco Webex; automatic labeling initially covers Google Workspace and Box.

Today, a small Microsoft 365 team can have data rules split between Purview and Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps. That makes it easy to leave an old file policy running while somebody builds a new Purview rule for the same connected service. The new locations create a more central place to manage protection, but Microsoft warns that running both policy types against the same non-Microsoft location can lead to unexpected enforcement. The rollout also introduces Enterprise licensing and pay-as-you-go at-rest protection costs, so this is a control change and a budget decision—not simply another toggle.

Analysis

List each Defender for Cloud Apps file policy for Google Workspace, Box and any other connected service you use. Before enabling the preview, choose one low-risk location, map its current policy and owner, then test the Purview replacement in audit mode before retiring the older policy.
