Project Online shuts on 30 September and the data goes with it

Microsoft’s final reminder, published 24 September 2026, confirms Project Online retires on 30 September 2026. After that date, projects and related data in the service are no longer accessible. Remaining users already see an in-app retirement banner. Microsoft points remaining work to Microsoft Planner, including premium Planner and Project Plan 3 features, Project Server Subscription Edition, or Dynamics 365 Project Operations. The shutdown is only for Project Online. Project desktop, on-premises Project Server, and Planner keep running. There is no admin opt-out. Incomplete moves mean Project Web App sites, reporting endpoints, APIs, and service-backed features stop. Backup tools that depend on those APIs, such as IBM Storage Protect for Cloud jobs, are due to stop on 1 October 2026.
Until now, some organisations still parked real project plans in Project Online while the rest of the team lived in Teams chats, Outlook flags, To Do, and Planner. Those two worlds rarely matched, so actions from meetings never had one trusted home. After 30 September that older SharePoint-based project layer simply disappears. If your group already tracks work in Planner, nothing in this retirement asks you to add another task app. If someone still owns a Project Web App site, the risk is not a new feature. It is silent loss of the plan, reports, and links nobody else knew were the source of truth.
Analysis
This is a trap to avoid, not a reason to rebuild your task stack. Ask the person who owns your project calendar whether any Project Online or Project Web App sites are still live, and if the answer is no, keep using Planner as the shared board and leave To Do for personal follow-ups.
