Power BI Report Builder exposes Power Query connection details

On 27 September 2026, Chris Webb highlighted changes in the latest Power BI Report Builder for people building paginated reports with Power Query. The Get Data button is now labelled Power Query, while a new dataset properties view exposes the M code, M parameters, and Cloud Connection ID, with a route into Fabric’s Manage Connections and Gateways page. Microsoft’s documentation says the integration requires Report Builder version 15.7.1819.28 or later.
Before this update, a Power Query dataset could leave the report owner hunting through Fabric when credentials expired or nobody knew which cloud connection a paginated report used. The report definition and the operational connection were harder to trace as one chain. Showing the connection ID beside the query and parameters makes first-line diagnosis more practical for accidental BI owners. It does not fix refresh failures automatically, but it gives the person maintaining the report a quicker way to identify the exact connection, its credentials, and the owner who should repair it.
Analysis
Update Power BI Report Builder, open one Power Query dataset’s properties, and record its Cloud Connection ID, parameters, and owner. Use Manage Connections and Gateways to confirm that the ID resolves to the expected connection before the next scheduled report run.
