Power BI locks date formats to report settings
Microsoft's May 2026 Power BI update makes default format string locale generally available for reports. Report builders can set a report-level locale so locale-aware date and number formats display consistently in visuals. Microsoft notes that this affects visual display only; USERCULTURE() and metadata translations still use the viewer's browser locale.
Small formatting differences can turn into trust problems when managers in different regions see dates, decimals, or currency-style values differently. Report builders then waste time explaining display behaviour instead of the actual numbers. A report-level locale gives analysts one more way to make dashboards behave predictably. It does not fix bad measures, source-data issues, or translation needs, but it can remove one avoidable source of 'why does my report look different?' confusion.
Analysis
Open one shared report used across regions and check whether date and number formats vary by browser or user. If they do, test the default format string locale in a copied report before changing the production version.
