Planner, To Do and Loop still keep the same work in three places

A comparison published on 18 September 2026, after hands-on testing of Microsoft Planner, Microsoft To Do and Microsoft Loop, restates a split that has not gone away. Planner is framed as team project boards and charts. To Do is framed as personal lists and daily focus. Loop is framed as live task lists inside chats and documents. Microsoft Support still describes the plumbing behind that split. Planner tasks assigned to a person can appear in To Do under Assigned to me. Loop task lists can sync with Planner, and tasks in Collaborative notes map to plan buckets. Move a task to another plan and it drops out of the meeting notes. Extra Loop lists in a Teams chat create extra plans. This is practitioner evidence plus current Support behaviour, not a Microsoft product change. Sync still has caveats: assignment is required for To Do visibility, Loop-created plans are not always Microsoft 365 Group plans, and field mismatches and delays remain a known complaint.
People already treat flags, To Do, Planner boards, Loop checklists and meeting notes as if they were one backlog. Assigned Planner work can surface in To Do, which looks like unification. It is not. Loop remains a separate place to write the work, even when a copy later exists on a board. What this round of testing confirms is the cost of that illusion. Unassigned Loop or Planner items stay invisible in personal To Do. A tidy meeting list can vanish from notes if someone moves the task. Two Loop lists in one chat become two plans. The overlap is real. A single trusted view is still not.
Analysis
This is a trap to avoid, not a feature to adopt. Keep personal work in To Do, team work in one named Planner board, and use Loop only as in-meeting capture that you assign before the call ends. Open Assigned to me this week and delete or rehome any Loop-created plan that is not that board.
