Outlook lets you hand a meeting to a new organiser from late September

Microsoft is adding Change organizer to eligible Outlook meetings. From late September through late October 2026, the current organiser can send a transfer request and the new person must accept before ownership moves. Phase 1 covers future non-online meetings only. Recurring series move later instances to the new organiser’s calendar, while past instances stay put. Internal Exchange Online attendees get a silent update. External and on-premises attendees get a cancellation plus a new invite. The previous organiser is not added as an attendee. Classic Outlook for Windows is left out. Web, New Outlook for Windows, and the Teams Microsoft 365 calendar are in. The new organiser must be in the same company tenant.
Until now, covering leave or a job change meant cancelling the meeting and sending a fresh invite. That broke the thread, scattered attachments, and left attendees unsure which calendar item was real. People coped with shared mailboxes, delegate access, or just hoping the original organiser stayed in the loop. The first release stops that cancel-and-rebuild ritual for ordinary calendar meetings, and it keeps the body, attachments, and sensitivity labels. It does not yet move Teams online meetings, chat, transcripts, recordings, or notes. Those come in later phases, and OneDrive links may still be locked unless they were already shared.
Analysis
Treat this as a change to act on for leave and offboarding, not as a Teams meeting fix. Before the next cover period, open Outlook on the web or New Outlook, list the recurring non-online meetings you own, run one transfer as a test, and re-invite yourself if you still need to attend.
