OpenAI makes advertising a core business inside ChatGPT

OpenAI announced that advertising is now central to its strategy. The company will run sponsored experiences tied to usefulness rather than traditional display ads. ChatGPT reaches more than 900 million weekly users. Roughly one in five queries already shows commercial intent. Conversations stay private. Advertisers will not see user data.
Until now, managers could treat public ChatGPT as a reasonably neutral research surface. Commercial intent was incidental and outputs were shaped mainly by training data. Once advertising revenue subsidises access, the model has a structural reason to surface paid options first. Generic answers will quietly tilt toward whoever pays, while the volume of AI-generated marketing content rises sharply.
Analysis
Treat raw ChatGPT as a public, commercially influenced surface rather than a neutral thinking partner. Move every recurring workflow that carries judgment, client data, or brand standards into a private project or custom GPT with explicit review steps and memory you control.
