OpenAI cuts flagship API prices for a few months but leaves ChatGPT plans alone

On 21 August 2026, reporting said OpenAI reduced GPT-5.6 Sol API rates to $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. The cut is framed as promotional pricing lasting at least through 21 November 2026. ChatGPT subscription prices and included quota budgets did not change. The discount applies to direct API calls, not to the consumer or business chat plans most managers use day to day.
Before this promo, many teams already treated every model price headline as a signal to rebuild how work gets done. In practice, the people who live in blank chats, custom GPTs, and shared Projects still paid the same seat costs and still carried the same checking load when outputs missed context or standards. What changed is only the short-term economics for systems that call the Sol tier by the token. For managers turning judgment into repeatable workflows, the real gap is still context, review steps, and handoffs. A temporary API discount does not make one-off prompting more reliable, and it does not create a team-ready blueprint on its own.
Analysis
Treat this as a trap to avoid for your own stack unless a no-code tool you already use bills against this API. This week, list any recurring workflow that might be usage-priced behind the scenes and write a one-page rule for inputs, privacy limits, and a human review step before anyone scales it on cheaper tokens.
