OneDrive cloud deletes leave the local Recycle Bin
Microsoft is changing OneDrive behaviour so files deleted from the cloud no longer appear in the local Windows Recycle Bin or macOS Trash. The message was published on April 3, 2026 and lists rollout from early May to late May 2026; cloud-deleted files can still be recovered from the OneDrive or SharePoint web recycle bin for up to 93 days.
Many people still treat OneDrive like a normal local folder, especially when files are synced to their desktop. When something disappears, the first habit is often to check the computer's Recycle Bin or Trash. This change makes that habit less reliable for cloud-deleted files. Users need to understand the difference between deleting a local file and deleting a cloud-backed OneDrive or SharePoint file, otherwise recoverable files may look permanently gone.

Update any internal help notes that say 'check the Recycle Bin' for OneDrive problems. Tell users to check the OneDrive or SharePoint web recycle bin first when a synced cloud file disappears.
