Older Power BI Desktop builds lose OneDrive saving

Microsoft says Power BI Desktop versions from March 2026 or earlier will no longer save and share files to OneDrive and SharePoint from October. The notice appears in the July 2026 update guidance, published on 18 August and updated on 20 August.
A reporting team can still have old Desktop builds on analyst laptops long after a shared workspace has moved on. When those users prepare or hand over .pbix files through OneDrive or SharePoint, an October cut-off becomes a workflow interruption rather than a cosmetic update. The risk is not just one failed save. Different Desktop versions can make a report handover harder to diagnose, especially when the report also depends on a semantic model, gateway, or shared file path. A small version inventory now gives the team time to update deliberately and confirm the normal handover route still works.
Analysis
Ask report owners to check the Power BI Desktop version on the machines that create or hand over .pbix files. Update one older build first, then save and share a non-production report through the same OneDrive or SharePoint route your team normally uses.
