Older Power BI Desktop apps lose cloud save in October

Older Power BI Desktop apps lose cloud save in October

Microsoft says that, from October 2026, Power BI Desktop versions from March 2026 or earlier will no longer support saving and sharing PBIX files through OneDrive and SharePoint. Teams must update to a newer Desktop version to keep using that save-and-share experience.

Many report teams still pass PBIX files through SharePoint or OneDrive so colleagues can open, amend and save the same report. An older Desktop install can turn that normal handoff into a last-minute support problem, even when the report itself still opens. This is a small product change with a practical deadline. It is worth treating as a reporting-workflow check now, rather than discovering in October that one analyst's machine has become the exception.

Analysis

Ask report owners which Power BI Desktop version they use, especially where PBIX files live in SharePoint or OneDrive. Put the October update requirement into the team’s normal software-update check.
