Old Power BI Desktop builds lose OneDrive and SharePoint save in October 2026

Microsoft says that from October 2026, Power BI Desktop versions from March 2026 or earlier will no longer support saving, opening, and sharing .pbix files to OneDrive and SharePoint. Anyone who still relies on that path must move to a newer Desktop build. The older file picker was already deprecated, and the newer picker became the default in April 2026. Only .pbix files work on this path. Personal OneDrive accounts are not supported, recipients must sign in to open shared links, and tenant admins or user options can still turn sharing off.
For a long stretch, Desktop-to-SharePoint save was the low-drama way to keep a cloud copy next to the Excel exports, Lists, and folder sources many monthly packs still depend on. Authors could version a .pbix, hand it to a colleague, and avoid emailing the only working file around. That habit often survived even when the service publish path felt heavier. The change is not about new modelling power. It is a client-version wall. Machines left on older Desktop builds will keep opening local files until someone hits Save or Share to the library and the path simply stops. Trust problems then show up as process failure: no current cloud copy, broken co-author handoff, and another undocumented exception in a reporting workflow that already has too many.
Analysis
Treat this as a quiet ownership deadline, not a product upgrade. Before October, list every machine and person who still saves .pbix files straight to org OneDrive or SharePoint from Desktop, confirm they are on a build later than March 2026, and verify the tenant still allows the share path you actually use.
