Old Copilot connector off switch stops working in October 2026

Microsoft is retiring the command-line control Set-FederatedConnectorToggle, which some tenants used to turn off federated Copilot connectors. Those connectors let Copilot reach systems outside the usual Microsoft 365 apps. The CLI was due to retire by 25 August 2026 so connector and agent settings share the same tenant controls. If an admin already used that CLI to disable federated connectors, Microsoft says the disable setting is honored only until 20 October 2026. After that date, the block will not stick unless Allowed agent types is updated to keep the same restriction. Admins who never used the CLI can still turn connectors off in the Microsoft 365 admin center under Copilot Connectors, or through Allowed agent types, in the window between 25 August and 20 October. Default federated connectors can be disabled globally, applied to future default connectors, or enabled one by one. This change covers federated connector governance, not every synced Graph connector.
Until now, a tenant could look locked down because someone ran a CLI toggle years ago. Users still saw Copilot in Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams, and assumed it could not reach third-party systems. That hidden switch was easy to forget and hard for adoption leads to verify. After 20 October 2026, that forgotten CLI setting expires. Copilot can start using federated connectors again unless Allowed agent types is set to match the old block. The risk is not a new button in the apps. It is Copilot quietly answering from systems people thought were off, which makes review, privacy, and trust harder.
Analysis
Treat this as a trap to avoid, not a feature to try. Ask your Microsoft 365 admin one question before 20 October 2026: whether Set-FederatedConnectorToggle was ever used to disable federated connectors, and whether Allowed agent types already keeps that same block.
