AI controls should match workplace decision risk

AI controls should match workplace decision risk

The Future of Privacy Forum and an industry working group released updated AI and workplace-assessment guidance on 5 August. It says safeguards should scale with the sensitivity of the data and inferences, the system’s autonomy, how close it is to a decision, and the significance of that decision.

Teams often label an AI use case low or high risk and stop there. That misses the difference between a drafting helper, a tool that ranks people and an agent that can act on a recommendation in a consequential workflow. The framework gives leaders a practical way to vary controls without pretending every use case needs the same process. More sensitive data, more autonomous action and closer proximity to employment decisions should mean stronger testing, auditability and human accountability.

Analysis

Take one AI-assisted people workflow and score it against the four factors: data sensitivity, autonomy, proximity to the decision and impact. Use the result to name the review point, the owner and the evidence you would need before expanding the pilot.
