New Outlook will offer a spelling check at the moment you hit Send

Microsoft is adding an optional spelling check that runs when you send a message in new Outlook, rather than relying only on the red underlines while you type. The company framed it as a last look before Send, using Microsoft Editor (the built-in spelling and grammar helper). The setting is due in Settings from October 2026, with wider availability not expected until at least mid-December 2026. Microsoft will not turn it on for you. Classic Outlook will not get this send-time check. Microsoft left it optional because Editor can still flag valid words, including British versus American spelling.
Until now, the last defence against a typo was whatever Editor marked while you were still in the compose window. Busy people still send the message, then see the mistake in the Sent folder. Classic Outlook users stay on that same pattern, plus the usual security and Copilot extras, without this extra stop at Send. What changed is not a new email system. It is one more setting that only new Outlook will have, and it will sit off until you choose it. If your team mixes classic and new Outlook, the same mailbox will behave differently depending on which client someone opened. Treat it as a small send habit, not as a fix for inbox overload or scattered follow-ups.
Analysis
This is a trend to watch, not a change to act on this week. When the setting appears in new Outlook, turn it on for your own mailbox for a few days and switch it off if it nags names, acronyms, or UK spelling.
