New Outlook gets an optional classic look this autumn

Microsoft is adding an optional setting in Outlook on the web and the new Outlook for Windows that restyles layout, type, icons, and some interactions to look more like classic Outlook. Targeted release started in mid-August 2026. Worldwide general availability runs from late September through late October 2026. The switch is off by default for most people and can be turned on or off at any time. Microsoft will turn it on by default for some users who are moved from classic Outlook to new Outlook. No admin work is required, and the setting does not move anyone off classic Outlook. It is a visual skin. It does not bring back classic-only tools such as COM add-ins. Some appearance options are missing when the classic style is on.
New Outlook has been changing where settings, views, and familiar chrome live, so people often treat a layout shift as a sign the whole mail system has changed. Before this, the only way to keep the old look was to stay on classic Outlook, even when the company was pushing the new client. After the rollout, looking like classic Outlook and working like classic Outlook are two different things. Mail, flags, and search stay in the new client. If the theme turns on after a switch, it can hide that you are already on new Outlook until a setting or add-in is missing.
Analysis
Treat this as a look-and-feel toggle, not a reason to switch clients or rebuild email triage. If you already use new Outlook or were recently moved, open Settings and check whether Classic Outlook style is on so a surprise layout change does not send you hunting for rules that never moved.
