Most solo founders now try AI before they hire anyone

Most solo founders now try AI before they hire anyone

FreshBooks published The Era of the Solopreneur report on 15 September 2026, based on a Wakefield Research survey of 500 solopreneurs and micro-business owners run from 22 June to 1 July 2026. Eighty-six percent said they try AI first when stuck on a task, before paying for help. Ninety percent said AI makes it easier to start and run a business, and 60 percent credited AI with helping them launch something they could not have built alone. Seventy-seven percent are using or experimenting with AI agents. Among AI users, 98 percent said it helped them get results they otherwise could not. Top uses include marketing and design (56 percent) and customer service (51 percent). Sixty-four percent said they care more about appearing bigger and more capable than their real size than about pure efficiency gains.

A few years ago, the default answer to overload was a contractor, a VA, or waiting until revenue justified headcount. AI sat in the optional-tools bucket. Capacity was expensive, so founders rationed what they shipped and what they automated. That rationing is weaker now. The survey shows AI has become the first-line substitute for hiring in the smallest businesses, especially for marketing assets, design, and support replies, with a strong bias toward looking larger than you are. What it does not show is better demand, clearer offers, or higher revenue. For a tiny product company, the bar for looking polished just rose, while the hard problems of proof, traffic, and conversion did not get cheaper.

Analysis

Treat this as a capacity baseline, not a growth strategy. Pick one bottleneck that actually blocks revenue this week (sales page, nurture sequence, testimonial ask, or support-to-docs loop) and keep only an AI draft workflow that produces a reviewed, shippable asset in under an hour. Drop anything that mainly makes the business look bigger without moving a buyer signal.
