Microsoft wipes Copilot spending alerts after Cost Management update

A Microsoft Cost Management update in early August 2026 cleared existing spending alerts tied to Copilot policies. Admins must recreate thresholds, monthly limits, and email recipients in each spending policy. Copilot Cost Management covers usage-based services such as Copilot Cowork and related credits. Settings live in the Microsoft 365 admin center under Copilot > Cost Management. Computer Use has moved into Cowork and now sits on consumption billing. Until alerts are rebuilt, organisations lose the notifications that previously flagged when credit use approached a limit. When a limit is hit, access to metered features can stop until the monthly reset.
Before this change, teams could trial metered Copilot features with a thin safety net: someone had already set a threshold and an email path, so overspend or a hard stop was at least visible. Adoption work could expand Cowork or credit-based use without watching the meter every day. After the update, that safety net is gone until an admin rebuilds it policy by policy. The practical risk is not only surprise cost. It is a sudden lockout mid-task that makes Copilot look unreliable to people who were only just starting to trust it. Quiet cost controls matter more than licence counts when usage-based features enter everyday Word, Excel, Teams, or agent-style workflows.
