Microsoft will remove Calendar People and Files taskbar apps in December

Microsoft will retire the Microsoft 365 companion apps for Calendar, People, and Files on 16 December 2026. The apps sat on the Windows 11 taskbar as a free extra with eligible Microsoft 365 or Office 365 licences. Automatic installation through Microsoft 365 Apps updates has already stopped. Microsoft is no longer shipping updates or security fixes. Admins are told to block new installs and remove the apps from managed PCs. On an unmanaged device you have to uninstall them yourself, and removing one companion app removes all three. Calendar events, contacts, and files are not deleted. Microsoft says to use Outlook and Teams for calendar and people, and Windows Search, File Explorer, SharePoint, OneDrive, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Copilot for files.
Last year Microsoft quietly put extra Calendar, People, and Files icons on many Windows 11 taskbars. For some people that became a habit: peek at the next meeting, find a colleague, or grab a file without opening Outlook or Teams. The rest of the work still lived in email, chats, and OneDrive, so the shortcuts never became a real system. Those icons are now a dead end. Microsoft has already stopped patching them, and they may vanish before 16 December if IT uninstalls them. Nothing in your mailbox, calendar, or files is going away. What changes is that the extra taskbar layer disappears, and the only reliable place to look is the same Outlook, Teams, and file locations you already pay for.

Treat this as a habit to drop, not a new tool to learn. If you still tap those taskbar apps, this week open the same meeting, contact, or file from Outlook or Teams once so December does not catch you mid-triage.
