Microsoft tightens SharePoint restricted content discovery for Copilot

Microsoft is rolling out changes described in Message Center item MC1427972 that tighten Restricted Content Discovery (RCD) for SharePoint. Files from protected sites that a user recently viewed, edited or shared will no longer reappear in organisation-wide Microsoft Search or Microsoft 365 Copilot through recently used file lists. Microsoft is also removing Copilot entry points from restricted sites; direct access and permissions do not change.
Before this rollout, RCD could still surface files from a protected site when the user had recently interacted with them. That weakened a control many admins use as a temporary guardrail while they review permissions and oversharing. The update closes that discovery gap and makes the SharePoint interface match the restriction more clearly. Admins can rely on RCD more consistently, but it remains a discoverability control rather than a permissions boundary and still needs a cleanup plan.
Analysis
Choose one RCD-protected test site and check Search and Copilot from an account that recently viewed a file there. Confirm the file no longer surfaces through discovery while direct access still works.
