Microsoft still ends Power BI Premium capacity at each contract

Microsoft is not selling new Power BI Premium per-capacity licences, known as P SKUs. Each remaining P subscription ends when the current agreement ends. Power BI Pro, Premium Per User, and Embedded A and EM licences are not part of this retirement. After a P subscription expires, content stays reachable for 30 days. From day 31, access is throttled and interactive work is delayed. From day 91, operations are rejected. Data is kept but unusable until workspaces move to a Fabric F capacity or the capacity is deleted. Fabric F capacities use Azure regional pricing, pay by the second with a one-minute minimum, and can be paused. F64 and larger still allow free viewer access in the Power BI style. Existing Premium discounts do not automatically carry over.
Until now, many reporting teams treated Premium capacity as the quiet background that made scheduled refresh and shared workspaces feel like a Microsoft 365 setting, not a contract with an end date. The monthly pack could fail for messy data or a gateway, but the capacity itself was assumed to keep running. That assumption is now time-boxed. If your workspaces sit on a P SKU, the failure mode after expiry is not a broken visual. It is delayed interaction, then a hard stop, while the same Excel files and Pro licences still look fine. Fabric F is the replacement path, not a new report design. The commercial clock is the agreement term, not a Microsoft marketing date.
Analysis
This is a change to act on only if you publish into shared Premium capacity, not if you live in Excel, Pro, or Premium Per User. Ask whoever pays for Power BI for the capacity SKU and the agreement end date, then check in the admin portal whether your production workspaces are assigned to that P capacity before the next renewal.
