Microsoft shifts Premium webinar and town hall features to standard Teams Enterprise

Starting April 1, 2026, Microsoft is migrating several high-end event capabilities from Teams Premium to standard Teams Enterprise licenses. The shift includes advanced webinar controls such as custom registration emails, waitlists, and manual approval workflows. Standard Enterprise users also gain access to expanded Town Halls and Immersive Events. Organizations can now host 3D virtual spaces for up to 300 attendees, while standard town halls can scale up to 100,000 participants if the company purchases an attendee capacity pack. Teams Premium will now focus almost entirely on advanced meeting protection, custom corporate branding, and specialized communication controls. However, IT departments will still need to maintain at least one active Premium license to manage the newly transferred event features.
Previously, hosting a professional-grade company all-hands or a marketing webinar directly in Teams required a costly Premium license for every organizer. Without that tier, IT administrators were stuck supporting basic meetings that lacked registration limits or custom emails, often forcing leadership to purchase redundant third-party platforms like Zoom Webinars. Now, the standard Enterprise license covers the vast majority of corporate event requirements. While this eliminates a significant licensing barrier and allows companies to consolidate their software stack, it also shifts the support burden directly onto IT. Departments that previously managed their own external tools will now expect their standard Teams client to seamlessly handle complex external registrations and large-scale broadcasts.
