Microsoft rolls out new SharePoint site templates with major limitations

Microsoft is rolling out a new batch of SharePoint site templates to targeted release tenants. The update provides pre-configured designs intended to help administrators build intranets and team sites more quickly. Administrators can store up to 100 custom site designs per tenant under the new system. However, the templates come with a significant technical limitation. They do not currently support pages or web parts.
IT administrators tasked with building an intranet previously had to start from a blank canvas. This forced teams with no design background to spend hours wrestling with column layouts just to get a basic communication site off the ground. Most ended up with a generic homepage that employees actively avoided. The new templates provide a structural starting point but fail to deliver a complete solution. Because they lack page and web part support, the actual user experience remains entirely on your shoulders. A template that only configures lists and themes will not stop your users from treating SharePoint like a legacy file server.
Analysis
Do not rely on these out-of-the-box templates to fix your broken intranet. They are structural shells that will not impress leadership or solve your adoption crisis. Instead, manually build one perfect communication site with the exact news and quick link web parts your company needs and document that layout as your permanent internal standard.
