Microsoft retires core Power Platform certifications for AI-focused replacements

Microsoft retires core Power Platform certifications for AI-focused replacements

Microsoft is retiring several Dynamics 365 and Power Platform certifications between June and August 2026 as it shifts training toward AI-era skills. Power Platform Solution Architect Expert (PL-600) and Power Automate RPA Developer Associate (PL-500) retired or hit end of June. Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate (PL-200) retires on August 31, 2026. Partial or recommended replacements include Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect and Intelligent Applications Builder Associate (AB-410). Certifications finished before the retirement date remain valid for one year afterward. Partner specializations that depended on the old exams face end-of-July 2026 transition deadlines. The July partner update frames this as a planned move into AI skilling rather than a minor catalog cleanup.

For years, the default proof of Power Apps skill sat on a familiar ladder: PL-200 style functional knowledge, SharePoint-backed canvas patterns, and classic architect tracks. Citizen builders could ignore the exams and still follow the same curriculum shape in tutorials and docs. That ladder is being taken down. Microsoft is signaling that the next official definition of competence includes agentic AI and intelligent app building, not only forms, galleries, and flows. You do not need a badge for your internal tracker to work, but the training, Copilot guidance, and “best practice” content you meet next will increasingly assume AI-assisted design is normal. The risk is not losing a cert. It is copying AI-generated apps and formulas that look official while still hiding weak data choices, delegation problems, or flows you cannot explain.

Analysis

Treat this as a trend to watch, not a trap that forces you into exam mode. Unless your company explicitly needs a partner designation, skip the retiring PL path and open the skill outline for Intelligent Applications Builder Associate (AB-410) once, then tie one listed topic to the app you are already building so you learn the new vocabulary against real SharePoint, formula, and Copilot decisions.
