Microsoft releases local server letting AI manage Fabric data

Microsoft has generally released its Fabric Local MCP server. This open-source tool allows AI agents to generate code, access OneLake files, and run Fabric CLI commands directly from a local machine. A VS Code extension makes setup straightforward. The Fabric Remote MCP server enters preview for cloud-based operations on workspaces, items, and permissions. It enforces user permissions and Entra ID authentication. File operations on OneLake are coming soon.
Power BI users relied on Copilot for basic DAX hints inside the app, but complex tasks like fixing inherited Power Queries or scheduling Fabric refreshes still meant hours of manual work and IT tickets. MCP servers now give AI a standard way to reach into Fabric resources, opening local testing of agent-driven fixes for data models and refreshes. This turns Fabric into a platform where AI can handle the grunt work your Excel habits can't scale to, without waiting for cloud previews or gateway configs.
Analysis
This local server won't replace your DAX struggles overnight, but it arms Copilot to actually dissect those 200-step Power Queries killing your refreshes. Download the VS Code extension right now, spin up the local MCP on your worst inherited report, and apply its first simplification suggestion before your next boss check-in.
