Microsoft adds file-creation agents to Copilot with admin controls

Microsoft’s updated documentation describes Word, Excel and PowerPoint Agents in the Microsoft Copilot app. They can create files using advanced AI models, but require a paid Microsoft 365 Copilot licence and an enabled Anthropic model connection for the tenant. Admins can block the model provider, which removes the agents for licensed users. Microsoft says the agents use Work IQ to retrieve only the files, emails, meetings and sites that the signed-in user is permitted to access; generated files are stored in OneDrive within the organisation’s tenant.
This is not a claim that agents now sit inside Teams, Word or Excel themselves. The documented experience is in the Microsoft Copilot app, where the agents create Office files. That distinction matters when leaders are deciding which work surface, licence and review process their team will actually use. The practical change is a governance decision before a workflow decision. Enabling the provider makes the file-creation agents available to licensed users, but existing access permissions, sensitivity labels and compliance policies still define what context can be retrieved. A good rollout therefore starts with a bounded document task and an explicit human check—not an open-ended invitation to automate Office work.

Ask your Microsoft 365 admin whether the Anthropic model connection is enabled for your tenant, then pilot one low-risk file-creation task with a named reviewer and a clear rule for which sources the user may draw on.
