Microsoft plans form-driven document templates for Copilot in SharePoint

Microsoft added Structured Document Generation with Forms to its public roadmap on 25 May 2026. The feature is listed for July 2026 release. It lets business process owners create governed templates in SharePoint. End users will fill forms to generate contracts, proposals, HR documents and similar outputs. The change targets high-volume, standardised document work rather than free-text drafting in Word or Outlook.
Until now, Copilot document work has relied on users typing prompts and hoping the output matches company standards. Process owners had no central way to enforce structure or compliance at the point of creation. Once the feature ships, the control point moves from the individual prompt to the template owner. Teams that already struggle with inconsistent drafts will still face that problem for another year, while those who own repeatable document processes gain a future route to reduce version drift and manual review.

Map the three document types your team produces most often and note which fields already follow fixed rules. Send that short list to your SharePoint owner now and ask to be included when the preview becomes available in your tenant.
