Microsoft overhauls SharePoint start page with unified creation tools

Microsoft has redesigned the SharePoint start page within Microsoft 365. The update introduces a unified creation hub that allows users to build sites, pages, lists, and document libraries from a single interface. The new layout integrates direct access to OneDrive to bridge the gap between personal files and shared company workspaces. This feature is not turned on by default. Administrators must manually enable the new experience through the SharePoint admin centre.
Historically, the fragmented Microsoft 365 interface forced users to navigate a maze of menus just to spin up a basic document library. This confusion routinely drove employees to create entirely new Microsoft Teams simply to get a file repository, accelerating sprawl and generating endless support tickets from staff who could not locate their own work. The consolidated start page removes that friction by placing site and list creation front and centre alongside personal files. While this drastically reduces the daily barrage of navigation queries, it also hands users a highly efficient tool for generating unmanaged sites if proper governance is absent.
Analysis
Microsoft just handed your users a high-speed button for creating more digital clutter, so do not enable this update blindly. You must restrict Microsoft 365 group and site creation to a dedicated IT security group before flipping this switch in the admin centre. Let the new interface solve their navigation problems without letting them multiply your orphaned site count.
