Microsoft opens GitHub Copilot harness for Copilot Studio agents

Microsoft made the GitHub Copilot harness generally available in Copilot Studio, calling it the runtime for reasoning-heavy agents and workflows. The harness coordinates models and agent parts, supports skills and memory, and can create and edit Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF files. Agents can attach workflows and MCP servers as tools, and the Windows 365 for Agents MCP server is generally available so agents can work with Cloud PC desktop apps and browsers. Since July 2026, Copilot Studio automatically creates a Microsoft Entra Agent ID for every new agent. A related roadmap item, RM570435, targets general availability in September 2026 to make custom agent replies in Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat closer to native chat, including formatting, streaming, citations, and tool traces.
Before this, many teams treated Copilot Studio agents as side projects: uneven chat behaviour next to built-in Copilot Chat, weak identity story per agent, and little ability to finish real Microsoft 365 artefacts without extra hand-offs. Everyday users still lived in Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams prompts, while agent talk stayed abstract. What changed is the platform floor, not the habit floor. Stronger file creation, tool hooks, Entra Agent IDs, and nearer Chat parity make multi-step agents more plausible inside the same place people already open Copilot. That also raises the cost of vague builds: polished agent output can look native while still needing the same fact, tone, permission, and audience checks that already slow generic Copilot drafts.
Analysis
Treat this as a trend to watch and a trap to avoid if someone wants an agent before you have a single repeatable workflow. Pick one narrow process that already ends in a Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF artefact, confirm the new agent gets an Entra Agent ID and how its replies look in Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, and only then decide whether Studio is worth a pilot versus a shared prompt playbook in the apps people already use.
